Shoreview Condominium Armored Dune
Shore View Condominiums is a shorefront property located in evacuation zone 1, which experienced extensive flood damage during Hurricane Sandy. The Shoreview Condominiums Board of Directors retained Local Office Landscape Architecture and Urban Design (LOLA) to produce schematic design drawings for a tilted garden wall with natural plantings. This structure would serve the dual purpose of acting as a barrier to protect the building envelope from flood water, and providing green aesthetic features in front of the façade of the building in accordance with guidelines of the HOA.
Insight Civil reviewed and developed the engineering schematic designs for a planted flood barrier in Rockaway Beach, NY. The barrier was designed by LOLA to protect Shore View Condominiums from up to four feet of tidal inundation and flooding. Insight Civil’s role also ensured that design plans would be in compliance with all applicable regulations.
Insight Civil’s engineering team performed structural calculations to inform material sizing and footing specifications for a vegetated flood barrier, and designed drainage elements of the barrier to protect the adjacent building envelope. Additional services included markups and review of site and utility surveys, engineering stamp for the finalized drawing set, and application filing with NYCDOB for approval.
This project received a Design Award in 2017 from the American Society of Landscape Architects New York.
