Shore Front Parkway Adventure Course
Insight Civil supported McLaren Engineering Group with assessing environmental impacts of a new park proposed in Rockaway Beach, NY for purposes of a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Tidal Wetlands permit. The park will feature an adventure course design, with permeable pavement and native plantings. The project is part of a series of redevelopment projects led by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYCDPR) aimed at restoring Rockaway Beach and surrounding areas that were destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, thereby increasing overall community resiliency.
Construction of the Shore Front Adventure course will establish active and passive spaces to create a diverse recreational environment for people of all ages including adult fitness, pickleball, seating and plantings. The project site is a narrow linear strip of land located along Shore Front Parkway adjacent to the Rockaway Boardwalk. The project design includes a drainage system, security lighting, electrical systems, water supply system, planting beds, seating and a fitness area. The proposed footprint of the park space has improved permeability by integration of pervious pavers and planting beds into the design. Grading for the site will be manipulated to direct the majority of the storm water to planted areas to mitigate runoff. Planners at Insight Civil performed review and assessment of environmental impacts of construction of the proposed project and prepared a full permit application package for a NYSDEC Tidal Wetlands permit which consisted of CEQR and NYS Department of State paperwork. Insight Civil developed maps required for the permit application, as well as developed technical language for the project description and calculations of changes in impervious areas associated with the project. The complete permit was filed and approved by NYSDEC in early August 2019.
