RISE NYC
The Rockaway peninsula is subject to flooding events that have had devastating impacts on residents near the water’s edge and is home to a host of vibrant coastal communities nestled between Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. While an urban coastline served by multiple forms of public transportation makes these neighborhoods unique places to live and attracts millions of beach-goers every year, it is also what makes them vulnerable to flooding from coastal storms today and into the future.
Sustainability specialists and planners at Insight Civil and Local Office Landscape Architecture & Urban Design (LOLA) performed site visits with renewable energy design specialists to evaluate small business sites in the Rockaway Beach community for the installation of small-scale renewable energy systems. Insight Civil team members are also providing drafting and site design services and developing site plan specifications for installation of each type of renewable energy system. Renewable energy system solutions that will be deployed under this program are solar, geothermal and daylighting. This work is funded through the RISE NYC program managed by NYCEDC, which provides free resiliency improvements to small businesses affected by Superstorm Sandy.
