NYC Ferry Wayfinding and Signage program
Insight Civil’s Planning + Urban Design group completed wayfinding and zoning analyses of 13 ferry landing sites (new and existing) to inform the wayfinding and signage program for the NYC Ferry.
Planners at Insight Civil performed field visits to inventory transportation systems, circulation patterns, destinations, site entry/exit points, transition points, critical decision points, building stock and land use mix, as well as other natural and cultural resources surrounding each ferry landing site.
Influenced by existing precedents in NYC’s transit system and wayfinding signage schemes, the Insight Civil Team developed and presented neighborhood directional signage and ferry landing identification signage concepts to the NYCEDC, NYC DPR, NYC DOT, and NYC Public Design Commission (PDC), which were subsequently approved. The planning team also recommended placement of more temporary signage and branding tools (i.e. street banner corridor schemes) that will increase awareness of the expanded ferry service and foster multi-modal transit connections.
