NYC Ferries
Insight Civil provided upland civil engineering design support and wayfinding and signage design expertise for the NYC Ferry project (formerly known as Citywide Ferry Services) with NYCEDC. In collaboration with SKANSKA and McLaren Engineering Group, Insight Civil developed construction drawings for all upland site/civil features for 13 new ferry landing sites, including parking lots, pedestrian pathways, utility connections, shoreline connection points and trenching for electrical conduit. The engineering team worked with Elizabeth Kennedy Landscape Architects (EKLA) and Lakhani & Jordan Electrical Engineers to address design of all upland features and shoreline connections that will link the ferry landing barges to the land. This project builds upon Insight Civil’s previous experience with site/civil design, waterfront/marine infrastructure projects, resilient design, and project management.
Engineers at Insight Civil developed complete plan sets for phased design submissions to NYCEDC and other stakeholders (i.e. NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, NYC Department of Transportation, etc.) and for submittal to the Planning Design Commission (PDC). The engineering team coordinated with regulatory agencies and utilities to obtain existing as-built drawings and utility plates for each ferry landing site. The engineering team participated in site visits and assessments to verify existing conditions and site features as shown on schematic design plan sets.
The Planning + Urban Design group at Insight Civil developed the wayfinding and signage program for the additional ferry landings, including proposed sign location plans, signage typologies, concept designs and maps. Planners at Insight Civil also provided design services for the ferry landing identification signs that will display the name of each ferry landing to passengers at the point of entry/disembarkation.
Service on three routes (Rockaway, South Brooklyn and Astoria) launched in May/June 2017, with further expansion of service and new routes launching by spring 2018. Insight Civil is proud to participate in development of New York City’s first citywide passenger ferry service in over a century, which will bring new transportation options to previously inaccessible neighborhoods or communities in ‘transit deserts’. This project was awarded the Engineering Excellence Platinum Award in Category H: Transportation by the ACEC New York in 2020.
