Ferry Landings Resiliency Upgrades
Insight Civil Engineering is supporting McLaren Engineering Group on the NYC Ferry Transit Resilience Project led by the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). The project intends to safeguard the New York regional transportation system, including both waterside/ferry and land-based portions of the network, against threats from future storms and other emergencies. The work focuses on implementing resiliency upgrades to strategic ferry landing locations in NYC, including the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, Hunter’s Point South, East 34th Street landing, and the Schaefer Landing in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn. These resiliency improvements will effectively modify capacity at each location to accomodate a broader range of vessel types and sizes and hardened to withstand the effects of sea level rise over time and of severe storm events. Improving these strategic ferry landing locations is especially critical in a metropolitan area that consists primarily of islands and peninsulas in which most of the population lives in coastal communities, and for which a reliable water-borne passenger transit system will be increasingly important both in the event of an emergency and as city and regional populations continue to grow.
Resiliency upgrades will consist of Hunters Point South barge replacement and landing hardening, Brooklyn Cruise Terminal upgrades, East 34th Street landing hardening and barge replacement at Schaefer Landing. Planners and engineers at Insight Civil will be supporting site civil improvements, design and environmental review and permitting for proposed upgrades. Planners at Insight Civil are working closely with members of the project team and the McLaren PM to move proposed projects through the required environmental review and permitting frameworks, including obtaining approvals from federal, state and local authorities having jurisdiction.
