Coney Island Hospital Resiliency Project
Insight Civil is the lead site/civil engineer for the Coney Island Hospital Campus Resiliency project. The Insight Civil engineering team is performing all civil and supplemental traffic design outside the building envelope for site improvements across conceptual, schematic design, design development, contract documents and construction administration tasks. The project area/site consists of the entire Coney Island Hospital Campus at 2601 Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, NY. The Insight Civil engineering team began work in 2016 on conceptual design documents. Insight Civil is supporting the prime architect, NBBJ, and the flood protection engineer, ARCADIS NY, on this $550 million project.
Insight Civil is responsible for preparation of all necessary infrastructure and utility, site drainage, grading, storm and sanitary sewer, SWPPPs, and builders pavement plans for the new Critical Services Structure (CSS) and for renovation of space in the main building. Additionally, site hydrology studies are being performed in conjunction with design development, to identify flood risk mitigation measures that will protect existing structures on the ground floor of the CSS. To date, Insight Civil has submitted site/floodwall conceptual design, site schematic design, and site/floodwall detailed design documents along with a stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP). Throughout 2018, the Insight Civil team is developing site contract documents and will eventually provide construction admin services. The anticipated project completion date is 2020.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the Coney Island Hospital facility sustained significant damage and disruption to patient care and critical services. One unique challenge on Coney Island Hospital Campus Resiliency project was to reconfigure the buildings on the campus and design a new CSS building, while flood proofing and hardening the site. Insight Civil was tasked with incorporating resilient infrastructure design to protect the campus against future severe weather and climate related events. Working with the structural engineer and the flood protection engineer, Insight Civil is providing support for on-site drainage design for the new CSS building, a new proposed parking structure, and for design integration of a floodwall structure.
